Background facts

According to the court's findings, the defendant, at the relevant time member of the Republic of Srpska Krajina's armed force, aided and abetted by another fellow soldier, killed a Croat civilian, medical doctor by profession, with several gunshots. The incident occurred in the area of Slunj, Croatia in the night between 22 and 23 December 1991.

Procedural remarks

In the aftermath of proceedings conducted in absentia before the County Court in Karlovac, Croatia, defendant AA was sentenced to 12 years in prison. His accomplice MG was also found guilty and sentenced by that court. As AA was not available to Croatia's authorities, the Croatian State Prosecutor's Office referred evidence in this case to the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor.
