Acting Chief Public Prosecutor for War Crimes, Dušan Knežević, spearheaded the PPOWC delegation which took part in the regional conference held on 17 and 18 September 2024 in Podgorica, Montenegro and which gathered prosecutors in the field of war crimes. The conference was organized by the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office of Montenegro, and was realized with the support of the EU and UNDP, with the aim of improving cooperation and ensuring the exchange of experiences between prosecutors handling war crimes cases.
Representatives of the IRMCT headed by Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz took part in the said conference, among others.
After reviewing the progress made thus far in the prosecution of war crimes, the conference discussed the modalities of further improvement of the existing cooperation. In this regard, the main topics covered the issue of mutual exchange of evidence, ways to improve the existing cooperation in the processing of letters of rogatory, as well as the consideration of the modality of facilitated access to witnesses and evidence. Also, special attention was paid to the issue of mutual assignment of cases and the processing of cases with an element of sexual violence in armed conflict.
The regular participation of the PPOWC in regional conferences of prosecutors is one of the activities carried out with the aim of further improving regional cooperation, and as such is foreseen by the most important strategic documents in the field of war crimes - the National Strategy for War Crimes Prosecution and the revised Prosecutorial Strategy for the Investigation and Prosecution of War Crimes.
